Camp is always the biggest highlight of each year for me! I have had the privilege of attending SHCM since its first year. Each year I always count down the days till I can totally exhaust myself for a whole week!! Yes! Believe me, it's very exhausting! The main reason for the increasing lack of physical energy throughout a week of camp is the games. I love putting all my strength into them! They are so incredibly fun! Nothing like having a whole bunch of new brothers for a week to wrestle and fool around with! Every year there are always a few games that take me totally by surprise. There is never a lack of variety! From big balls to gallons of cold water, there is always something to enjoy!
As much as I look forward to the games each year, I would have to honestly say what really draws me is the preaching! Some of the best sermons I've ever heard were preached right at SHCM. There never seems to be a lack of convicting power at camp! Many times I was convicted about areas of life that needed work! To me, the evening rally is a special time of singing and preaching. Directly after the closing invitation at each rally night is a time SHCM calls “Quite Reflection Time.” Here's what happens, everyone spreads across part of the camp property to spend personal time with God and “reflect” on what was just preached. It's a wonderful time! I always try to get as far away from everyone else as I'm allowed. This time has helped me make greater commitments to God that last.
Not only is your schedule full of games and preaching, but it's full of food too - literally! Personally, I've grown up on a strict diet of home cooking all my life, and I can assure you, SHCM has some of the best food outside of home! My buddies and I go crazy! The kitchen staff at SHCM some how can add a touch of home to the meals every time! As I go back for seconds, I often have to comment to the cooks at the food window, “Wow! This tastes just like my mom's!”
In addition to the kitchen being superb, the counselors are great too! Counselors make it a point to spend some personal time with each one of their campers to offer any spiritual assistance. I, personally, look forward to this “one on one” time with my counselor each week. I enjoy talking about God, and I know my counselor does too! I always go away from a one on one spiritually refreshed.
The main reason I love camp is because I made some important decisions there that have, literally, changed my life. Summer camp, year 2003, I surrendered my life to God to do with what He pleases! I believe God has called me to be a preacher – more specifically an evangelist. I can't wait to see how God will use me in this ministry! I do everything I can to prepare me for this calling. (Every time I mention this I feel like I need to ask for prayer too! So if you would happen to think of it, pray for this “preacher boy”! He needs God's help too!)
Not only do I owe a lot to this camp, but I owe everything to God because of this camp! Praise the Lord for how He has used this ministry in my life!
